Geographical position |
An ancient settlement of old Moldova - Orhei, located in central
- eastern part of the country and bordering at North with Soroca
district, at East - with the river Nistru, at West - with Baltsi
district and in the south - with district Lapusna. The most northern
settlement was village Poiana, located in Rezina and most southern
- Criuleni fair.
The region Orhei had the area - 4.246 sq. km., at the centre
is located city of Orhei. Now we have four cities: Orhei, Rezina,
Telenesti and Sholdanesti, and also 235 villages.
Landscape:
The region Orhei is a hill crossed on floors by the rivers Raut
and Nistru. Its relief is very various and has the form of a
natural amphitheater consisting of forest Codru, towering on
275 meters above the sea level. The highest hills are: " Imile
Codrului " - 361 m. " Colinile Ciulucului " -
388 m. and " Colinile Nistrului " - 347 m. And largest
valleys are: " Valea Ivanosului " long 17 km, " Valea
Lopatnei " long 11 km, " Valea Mineidee " - 11
km near villages ??????????? and " Valea Hajdieni ",
which begins just above the Hijdieni village and ends near village
Berezloji. Earlier, about 56.667 hr. of our region's land was
covered by forests, that placed it on the second place after
Lapusna region. In present it consists just 311,04 sq. km.
Population:
At present, in Orhei region live about 304,02 thousand people
(data from 31.12. 1999), or 8,3 % of all population of the Republic
of Moldova. Density is 107 people/sq. km. Only in Orhei district
live 116,3 thousand people. About 22 % of the population lives
in city Orhei and 78 % - in villages.
The city of Orhei is the administrative and cultural center
of the region, situated at 46 km. from Chishinau City, and inhabited
by 27.7 thousand people.
Those 75 locations are concentrated in 38 administrative centers.
In 3 villages the majority of the population is constituted from
Ukrainians.
The population is concentrated in:
Orhei city........................... 27.7 thousand people;
Rezina city........................ 14.8 thousand people;
Telenesti city....................... 9.0 thousand people;
Sholdanesti city.......... .........8.71 thousand people.
The surface of arable land is about 42,600 ha, or 35.93%. The
most important cultures are wheat, grapes and potatoes.
Average temperatures are During Winter: - 8C, during summer:
21C. Annual precipitation - 490 - 525 mm. Vegetation period constitutes
about 265-300 days.
Industry:
From 1992 till present there were registered 35,700 economic
agents. The share of private sector constitutes already 100%
of the total number of economic agents that activate in the region.
In agro-industrial sector, the volume of production constitutes
about 55 mln. lei, employing about 41,000 people.
There are 48 industrial units which activate in the region,
employing 3853 people (year 2000) and 3313 people (year 2001).
Labour productivity of an employee is 75,441 thousand lei (2000)
and 79,455 thousand lei (2000).
The volume of industrial production reaches 420 mln. lei. There
are 24 construction companies in the region, 4 big auto parks
with approximately 200 vehicles. The communication center Orhei
offers phone services via telegraph, E-mail, serving 29.1 thousand
people, out of which 24.4 thousand are private people.
Historical monuments:
The museums and archeological centers Orheiul Vechi, Ethnographic
museum (Ivancea), the museum of Donici Family (Donici village),
Serghei Lazo muzeum (Piatra village), the Cathedral St. Dumitru,
the Vasile Lupu church from Orhei, the monuments Saharna & Tsipova,
Curchi monastery and others.
In Orhei region there are 147 working churches and 9 working
monasteries
There are 191 villages and 4 cities in the region. 7 industrial
enterprises are registered, 1 cement plant, 11 wine factories,
2 tobacco processing factories, etc.
Education:
There are 35 high schools, 90 secondary schools, 25 polyvalent
schools, 3 medical schools, 1 pedagogic school "Vasile Lupu" Orhei,
sport schools - over 90, 50 primary schools, etc.
Cultural activity:
The region's cultural activity comprises 164 cultural centers,
173 libraries, 10 art schools and 6 museums.
